Marans, Olive Eggers and BackCrosses
Black Copper Marans hold a special place in our hearts—they were the first chickens we ever bred, back when we had zero experience. We sold those eggs locally for $20 a dozen—not because they were the best layers, but who can resist those dark, chocolatey eggs? Our original rooster, a huge and beautiful bird, has since moved on to guarding our egg-laying flock, keeping everyone safe and in line.
In 2024, we attempted to start a new Marans flock with a local rooster and some locally sourced hens. Let’s just say it was an… educational experience. One “black copper” hen turned out to be a green egg layer, and a few other local Marans didn’t quite meet our standards for breeding. We even lost that gorgeous local rooster to a predator before moving the hens into a Legbar pen—frustrating doesn’t even begin to cover it.
After a short break, in 2025 we decided to do it right, bringing in what we hope are high-quality Marans from GreenFire Farms. We currently have a few Legbars growing out with these Marans and are planning to offer Marans and Olive Egger eggs for sale. We also have a known Olive Egger (Maran hen x Legbar rooster) and a back-cross Olive Egger (Olive Egger hen x Marans rooster) that will join the flock once we confirm the BC1's egg color. Who can resist an olive egg and all of its beautiful color nuances?
This flock is still young and we do not expect to have anything to offer until Summer of 26.
